Many trusts, particularly irrevocable trusts, provide much of their value by reducing estate tax liability. As the federal estate tax exemption has risen, and states have eliminated or reduced estate taxes, it may seem like there is no value in having a trust.This cannot be further from the truth. While some trusts are estate tax focused, there are a large number of trusts which provide value completely outside the estate tax. Trusts can provide asset protection from creditors, reduce probate expenses, help you qualify for government benefits and allow you to extend your control over your assets, among other benefits.
